Sooner or later you are going to get asked to serve in a leadership position. It might be a steering committee where you practice or maybe even a community-based role in your kids’ school or faith community. Whether you like it or not, most people assume physicians must be natural leaders by virtue of their many years of experience, training, and wisdom.
After picking yourself up off the floor from laughing and before you say "yes" to that new leadership opportunity, I would like to propose a few questions to consider:
This is by no means a complete list, nor would I want to discourage you from aspiring to be a leader. We need more physicians who are leaders, both in their healthcare systems and practices, as well as in the general community. But I do encourage you to count the cost and know how you can serve most effectively.
With that in mind, I want to provide you with a list of leadership opportunities offered by ACMS for those who are ready to take their next steps in personal and professional development.
ACMS Leadership Opportunities
Idaho Medical Association House of Delegates – Remember the Mock United Nations exercise you did in high school? This is it back in its full glory but these resolutions from IMA physician members actually direct its policy. ACMS pays $500 for members to attend the annual meeting, this year July 29-31 in Sun Valley. Register here to attend.
ACMS Board of Directors – maybe you are more interested in the grassroots activity of connecting local physicians together. Come be a part of our desire to make Ada County the most collegial and healthiest medical community in the nation. Monthly Monday lunch meetings are part of the gig and you have to be a full-time practicing member physician. Self-nominate here by August 31st.
Adopt-a-Resident – Remember how valuable a good meal was during your residency days? Here’s a chance to help welcome the new batch of residents to Boise through a few connections during their intern year. It’s a low commitment opportunity to “spread the love” to those who have no time to breathe. Apply here.
Shadowing Hosts Needed – Are you a natural physician teacher? We offer the opportunity for physicians to spend clinical time shadowing another host physician and both get CME. You may think you have nothing to offer to another physician, but you would be surprised that your normal patient education script is something another physician could really grow and learn from. Inquire within.
